SELF CONTROL AND YOU

SELF CONTROL AND YOU
                                                                                                      _A P ANAND

A self control is a fine fettle and middle path to remain healthy and balanced under controlled/ subjugated nerves. The maverick behavior is not helpful. A person having this quality will not care about the ears and eyes of others but will have faith and entrenchment in own self and not drool after any one for help, nor back-track from endeavors. No doubt he will face many debacles in life which will, rather, prove as nourishment in the long run. He will not act like politicians of today who retract, very often, from their committed statements to gain some mileage which is considered as self character assassination. A self controlled person will either avoid or overlook any unwanted/ undesirable happenings/situations. He will not cross his confines under any circumstances and will try to control himself in taking excessive measures to avoid roiling the situation. Being in high esteem, thoughtful and disciplined ways, he will use his vital energy in non-violent manner. Mind it that fasting and vow of divine silence in protest are the sharp weapons of self controlled persons, like Mahatma Gandhi and his ilk, which could/ can cut ice to calm down the raging passions of those against his/ their ideals. Self controlled persons are open and whole hearted imbibing magnanimity and eschew ego which blunts the mind of almost every person. He can face-lift his lost glory and achieve the highest pedestal and combat his self created low feelings with the guidance and help of his torch-bearer.

Patience and resilience are very much desired of the seeker of spiritual path. A self controlled person has patience like a ‘Chatak’ bird (Pied crested cuckoo) which waits for a long time till it drinks first drop of rain-water to quench thirst. He also becomes flexible like a tortoise under the given circumstances, Gita also says so.

One who loses control of self is branded as a lazy person and will destabilize his own life and that of others as well. He has no control over sense organs and will have penchant for lust and cravings for unwanted things. He may even duck the humble advice of others and stick to his own guns. If not controlled in time, such a person will become irresistible and irrepressible and may adopt unbalanced ways in business and public dealings also. He will be kicked around by life. We should not forget the end result of King Ravana who did not control his unrighteous ways, though a highly learned person, in spite of humble advice.

An uncontrolled person will be demoralized and will be out of gear. He will become a self-denial personality without wits, withdrawn, wishy-washy and holder of unpopular views. His decisions will depend upon others. He will disenchant others easily and may become intolerant, impudent (disrespectful), insane, fanatic and grouchy to stoke anger. He will easily become victim of authoritarianism. He may suffer from addiction of many miseries/ diseases and become unhealthy like a living corpse. His lust for love/ romance, especially one-sided, will recede his will-power and will throw him to abyss. His pristine beauty and chastity are lost and mind mystified. He will indulge in unlawful activities, corruption and embezzlement and subversion rules.

On the other hand a self controlled person will strengthen his stamina and reflexes (stimulations) and win the hearts of others as his mood and vigour elevate due to which he enjoys life. He is firm and aggressive in his resolve and may take to his stride even the cogent criticism. He is never frustrated to face obstacles of life and will never switch over to unhealthy life style. The resistance power and confidence of such persons increase as well as control over anger and language laced with sarcastic words which act as sharp edged deep penetrating weapons to denigrate others. Thus he becomes an embodiment of gentle personality with fine qualities to weave better relations with others. He will neither adopt illicit means for his personal gains nor impinge upon the feelings and sovereignty of others. He is perfectly fit to live in solitude for transformation towards spirituality.

A self controlled spirited person can achieve the grace of God and ecstasy with his will-power, faith and devotion. His all ills and worries will vanquish even by chanting Lord’s name. He becomes a righteous person and will sacrifice everything for the sake of others. In other words he will act as “Sankat Mochan” (Remover of woes) for anyone who is in distress, is fallen, Like Sri Hanuman who served and helped Sri Rama in many ways and still considered himself as self-effaced. Swami Vivekananda rightly said, “Face the difficulties boldly, fear is sin and degradation; find out truth for yourself and do well to all others.” The person of these traits will also concentrate and control his mind through meditation and study of scriptures for gaining peace, purity and reality. It is mind which remains restless, bouncy and fleeting. Due to his fortitude nature he will not abandon his chosen path under any circumstances, like an ant. With his other qualities like renunciation, absence of hatred, compassion, patience, truth, absence of ego and anger and forgiveness etc., will gush down towards fortitude. He will become monotheist (believer in one formless God_ “Ek Onkar”- in comely form). Bhagvad Gita says that selfishness, anger and greed are gateways to hell. To achieve best result in self control the efforts should be persistent. The author believes and hopes that we all will become infallible and indomitable personalities with our godly traits and will never meekly submit to unnatural situations under the spirit of self control.
