Sanctity versus sins

          SANCTITY VERSUS SINS
                                                                                         _ A P ANAND
We get human birth with great difficulty as one gets gems by swimming deep in the ocean. It is disheartening that instead of making life worthwhile we waste our precious time, to know the reality and purpose of life, and entangle ourselves in its intricacies and attachments in ignorance or intentionally. We can sanctify it during our life time and achieve ‘moksha’ (liberation) from the cycle of birth and death. It will be a prudent approach, for the present and next birth, to immediately imbibe virtuous life under the guidance of an enlightened soul and with our own intellect. How many sins we might have committed and injured the feelings of others to derive our own pleasures in this finite life? If we recognize our naked truth and semblance our all difficulties will be resolved and we will never allow ourselves to be trapped in the snare. The rock like foundation of our life is based on our ‘dharma’ (imbibes) and spirituality. This only can make us pure and sacred. If a person completely submits to God’s will in faith he/ she will achieve any goal in life. We have to purify our soul, which is infinite, every day. Sin is like a borer or termite which hollows and destroys our life and will foster if not controlled and absolved. Sin is also like scum of the soul which should be removed at any cost. Also we have to face the consequences of our sins and enjoy sanctity by ourselves only.

Sin means an act that breaks a religious or moral law. All the religions teach us to opt humility, courtesy, humanity and not to hurt the feelings of others. A sinful person is guilty in every respect as he transgresses his limits, is deeply mired in falsification, immorality, perjury, vices, crimes, corruption, fraud, outrage, racism, character assassination, several demerits and will inflict painful onslaught on others. Also he is trapped and obsessed with usurpation of someone’s property, anger/ rancor, hypocrisy, debauchery, wrangling, abomination (extreme hatred), violent disorder, subverting and crossing the epitome and sacredness of justice with unsound, false reasoning and spinning false stories. Besides, he will have the demerits of cruelty, untruth, robbery, intolerance, sex discrimination, sexual lust, unwanted desires, ego, greed, jealousy, enmity, plundering someone’s money, spewing venomous words to others, upping the ante/ fanning the flames against someone and remaining flabbergast etc.

The sinner, with the above said characters, will lead fractured life; will be labeled as one of hellish species and a heavy bundle of sins. His relations will not remain on even keel with everyone and he will pine with sins. He will deplore (strong disapproval or condemnation) others, nurse the grudge and try to denigrate them. He may also use blasphemy against others’

religion, use provocative/ incendiary language to hurt their religious sentiments. Thus he will be trapped in the vortex of despair and may bite even the feeding hands. He will, while grappling with difficulties and grueling, lead entrenched and low esteemed life. Sin is like a dragon which spews wild fire to engulf the culprit and turns him/ her into ashes. If you have not done anything virtuous in life, you are not worthy of salt and someone may shoo you off or boot you out or toss you away. The sinner should beg for excuse to those whom he has hurt otherwise he will be considered as a cause of cosmic chaos/ great distress. Thomas Fuller has rightly said, ‘He that falls into sin is a man; that grieves at it, is a saint; that boasteth of it, is a devil.”

“Punya” or virtues insight/ sanctity/ holiness have many merits and qualities attached/ linked to it. It is earned and is based on our ‘karmas’ (actions), behavior, purity of body, mind and soul, morality, kindness, chastity, truth, kindness, propriety, honesty, humanity, mitigating the sufferings of others, offering of organ transplantation on death for the needy, donation to the needy especially for education and selfless service to humanity in general and use of worthy sweet language etc.

“Punya” is like adding a feather to our cap in life. The person will be known as a philanthropist and will carve a niche in society, enrich it and earn plaudits. Dame luck will favour him wind-falls. He will have Zen-like sterling qualities. Lord will grant him spiritual bestowals. His infusing a few breaths to an utmost needy will add years to one’s life and his own image will bolster and spirits and sentiments herald. This way he will set an example of meritorious virtues for others. His encouragement will improve morality and intectuality. This way he will scorch his own sins. In short, he will become a crème de la crème personality. Someone has aptly said that those who wish to bloom and flourish do so like sylvan flowers even in the jungle. The author mentions hereunder two useful and worthy quotations:
1)      A person who talks most of his virtue is often the least virtuous….Jawaharlal Nehru.
2)      Virtue consists, not in abstaining from vice, but in not desiring it….George Bernard Shaw.
We should be careful in activating our mind so that our life’s scale does not tip towards wrong/sin side. We should perform good actions, expiate and absolve our sins (past and present) so that our present and next life also glorifies. Let us pray God that we lead balanced life and there is no difference between our words and actions. Also we should recognize, take pride in magnificence of character and not in one’s icon.
